AI coding assistant
An AI coding assistant helps programmers write, explain, fix and test code, either by suggesting lines as they type or by completing whole tasks as an agent.
Also called AI code generator, coding copilot, coding agent
In more detail
Assistants range from autocomplete inside a code editor to agents that read a whole project, make changes across many files and run tests. Examples include GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code.
They speed up routine work, but developers remain responsible for reviewing what the AI writes, especially for security.
