Speech recognition
Speech recognition is AI that turns spoken words into text, so you can talk to a device or get a written transcript of audio.
Also called speech to text, voice recognition, automatic speech recognition, ASR
In more detail
Modern speech recognition uses deep learning to handle different accents, background noise and fast speech. It is the first step in most voice assistants: your words become text, then the assistant works out what you meant.
The reverse process, turning text into spoken audio, is text to speech.
Example
Dictating a message on your phone, auto-generated video captions and meeting note-takers all use speech recognition.
