AI glossary · Building and running AI
Open-source AI
Open-source AI means models that are free to download, use and modify. Many are “open-weight”: the trained model is shared, but not the data it was trained on.
Also called open-weight model, open model, open-source LLM
In more detail
Fully open-source AI shares the model, code and details of the training data. Open-weight models, like Llama, DeepSeek and many others, share the trained parameters so you can run and fine-tune them, often under licences with conditions.
Open models let people run AI privately with local AI and inspect or customise it. The opposite is closed or proprietary AI, used only through the maker’s app or API.
