Generative AI is AI that creates new content, such as text, images, music, video or code, from a description you give it.

Generative AI models learn the patterns in huge collections of existing content, then produce new material that follows those patterns. You usually steer them with a prompt.
Text tools like ChatGPT are powered by large language models. Image and video tools often use diffusion models. The output can be impressive, but it can also be wrong or biased, so it needs checking.
Example
Typing “a watercolour of a lighthouse at dawn” into an image generator, or asking a chatbot to draft a thank-you email.
