Chatbot
A chatbot is a program you talk to in text or voice that replies like a person would. Modern AI chatbots like ChatGPT are powered by large language models.
Also called AI chatbot, chat bot, bot
In more detail
Older chatbots followed scripts and could only answer questions they were programmed for (see rule-based AI). AI chatbots built on large language models can hold open-ended conversations, write, summarise and explain almost anything.
Businesses use chatbots for customer support, and people use them as general AI assistants. They can still make mistakes, so treat answers on important topics as a starting point.
Example
The chat window on a shop’s website that answers “Where is my order?”
